ARI KIM

Filmmaker, Art Director, Artist

Ari, a New York-based Artist and Filmmaker, skillfully captures candid emotions and timeless moments that have been softened by time. Unveiling forgotten memories, or those she may have wished to forget, is a poignant process. However, it has become essential for Ari to delve into these experiences, gaining a deeper understanding of her emotions in those moments and translating them into her artistic endeavors.

Ari's artistic ambition revolves around fully encapsulating herself, embracing raw authenticity, with her body serving as a powerful medium of expression. The hallmark of her art is honesty—a sincere and transparent tone that permeates her creative work. She doesn't anchor herself solely in the past; instead, her creations serve as a documentation of her evolution as an artist, a daughter, a mother, and as an individual. Ari's work reflects her journey and a narrative of progression and growth.

“The fold, or the crease, is the evidence that a gesture or moment existed in time. And therefore it creates shadows by the crease. The shadow is the evidence that something exists. I’ve always been perplexed by this idea, that if one doesn’t have a shadow, does it not exist? I exist, therefore my shadows exist. I guess dead people also exist too, perhaps, as long as their shadows are there. When their body becomes the ground, they would still be a part of this world.”

Her films have won the Cannes World Film Festival, and Independent Short Film awards, and screened at Berlin Short Film Festival.
